| Another bit of Lazio history has left us. Stefano Chiodi has died today, at the age of 52.
His stay at Lazio has been very short, but very intense. A joke of the destiny made him pay for the mistakes of all, in another tough year for Lazio and Lazio fans.
Striker, he moved to Lazio in the season 1980-1981 from AC Milan, where he had contributed to the rossoneri's 10th scudetto. Just relegated to Serie B after the football betting scandal, Lazio was in shock. The players, who were sure to play in Serie A just a few weeks from the sentence, decided to stay anyway.
The team, built to play in A, was strong and concluded almost undefeated the first half of the season, top of the table. But then something happened. Lazio started to give up, players lost the focus, and the season turned into a nightmare.
Lazio was fourth with just two matches to go. The home match against Vicenza was a must-win. A few minutes from the final whistle the match was still level, when the referee gave Lazio a penalty kick. A goal would have meant Serie A.
Stefano Chiodi, who had been almost perfect from the 11 meters so far, missed that penalty, with the ball hitting the post.
It was a drama. Chiodi's wife - as his teammate Arcadio Spinozzi wrote in his book - bursted into tears and run to the locker room. She knew what was going to happen. Outside the stadium, it was like a warfare scenario, with Lazio fans getting mad. Chiodi, with his wife, had to leave Rome, cursed by the Lazio fans.
The same Lazio fans that now regret that anger, and give the last goodbye to Stefano. | |
