Bravo GiO Very nice topic. Well I'm from Macedonia. How to start my journey so you will understand Macedonia's full history, cultural and spiritual heritage.
- Well first I want to tell you something about my country before posting any pics. First My country probably is most famous of Philip second and Alexander the Macedonian (the great). Maybe one of the oldest country's in the world. Macedonia is also a biblical country because is mention in the bible three times. "Paul was summoned by the vision of the "man of Macedonia" to preach the gospel there (Acts 16:9)" and the first Christian inhabitant in Europe was Lydia women from Macedonia "The first convert made by Paul in Europe was (Acts 16:13-15) Lydia (q.v.), a "seller of purple," residing in Philippi, the chief city of the eastern division of Macedonia." So if there was not Macedonians maybe Paul will never spread Christianity in Europe.
- The oldest artifact found in Macedonia - Adam of Macedonia, sometimes referred to as Adam of Govrlevo, is a Neolithic sculpture more than 6.000 years old, it is the oldest artefact found in the Republic of Macedonia and among the oldest in the world. At the world archaeological symposium in Croatia in 2002, archaeologists declared the sculpture one of the world's ten most important archaeological finds.
- Kokino is an important archaeological site and a megalithic observatory discovered in 2001. The site is more than 3800 years old. The importance of the site was confirmed by the U.S. space agency NASA, which placed it on its list of ancient observatories on 4th place.
- Some of the famous people born in Macedonia: Justinian 1, Mother Teresa, Mustafa Kamal Ataturk...etc.
I strongly advise you to try to search many more things about my country. A man from Poland was sent here from European commission, he like it so much that inspired him to make a web site with Macedonian beauties http://macedonialovesyou.com/. I also use pics from this site
http://www.pbase.com/alangrant/macedonia.

Here is Ireland/Northern Ireland.

The island is quite simple to explain geographically. As with all practically built countries, all cities are located along the coastline. However, it is these coastal areas that also provide the picturesque Ireland. The inland area is just a bunch of hills separated by small towns and greenery.

I'm from County Donegal, the most northern part of Ireland. Because of this, many people believe Donegal to be part of Northern Ireland (even some southerners have this perception). This is not the case.

The east side of Donegal is just many towns and villages within the countryside. The nearest city to me is Derry/Londonderry/The Walled City. The city itself is in Northern Ireland and officially it has three names due to political and religious differences. The city is quite unique as it is partially surrounded by walls and is one of few cities in Europe to never have its walls breached. Truly is a wonderful city, vibrant, cultured, enigmatic, friendly but horrible Irish accents. This is what it looks like:

Show Us Your Country Derry2
Show Us Your Country Derry1

The west side of Donegal is altogether different. Donegal is a massive district geographically and people don't realise how different it can be from a few miles to the next. The west coast has some sexy beaches such as that in the town of Portsalon:

Show Us Your Country Donegal

To the south west of Donegal is Sligo which has been voted the prettiest part in Ireland. It's not, but it is on the west coast which is widely associated with being beautiful and its scenery is representative of Ireland as a whole:

Show Us Your Country Sligo

More examples of the lovely west coast. Killarney (a tourist hotspot):

Show Us Your Country Killarney

Also on the west coast, The Cliffs of Moher:

Show Us Your Country CliffsofMoher

Ireland/Northern Ireland has two attractions people should see. One is the Giant's Causeway, just outside Belfast. It is a natural marvel but one should only visit it when in Ireland and should not go to Ireland specifically to see it unless you have an interest in geology. Once you realise its beauty it becomes just plain boring lumps of rock:

Show Us Your Country GiantsCauseway

The real and somewhat forgotten work of art is Newgrange. It was built over 5,000 years ago and was probably used as some kind of tomb although nobody actually knows. What's so special about it? Well it basically puts the pyramids of Egypt to shame. On the 21st December (winter solstice), sunlight shines through into a small chamber within Newgrange. This shows that the people who built this tomb had a complex and accurate notion of time. One can visit Newgrange all year round but on Dec 21st, you have little chance. I have heard the waiting list can span decades and I've also heard that they have a big lottery each year to decide who visits:

Show Us Your Country Newgrange

Then there's Dublin. Tourists love Dublin (mainly for drinking) but in Irish terms, it is remarkably dull and few Irish people find Dubliners sociable (except the dubs themselves). Quintessentially Irish it may be, but a poor, perhaps even bad representation of my country:

Show Us Your Country Dublin

The fact they have the most ridiculous monument in history (The Spire) says enough:

Show Us Your Country TheSpire

The sad thing is, even if you take just a 30 minute drive out of Dublin, you will find something as beautiful as my university, The National University of Ireland Maynooth. Basically it's an arts and science college but its architectural origins stretch back to the 1700's. Maynooth has always been the training ground of Irish priests and even now, within the university structure, part of the campus is set aside especially for the training of priests. The picture below shows were the clergymen hang out:

Show Us Your Country NUIM

That's all folks!

Dublin has embraced so many cultures over the years that it has kind of lost its magic. Amongst the globalisation, Dublin has forgotten how to welcome people and it can really come across being a cold, unfriendly place. I can see why anyone would love Temple Bar...Dublin still has a little glimmer of romance.

I haven't travelled round Ireland much but if I were to do so, I would either go to all the scenic spots with a loved one or get a few mates, head to the backass of nowhere and sit drinking in pubs with the locals.
