The season 1952-53 saw Lazio ending in tenth place just four points above relegation zone with the main satisfaction being the triumphs in both derbies. During that season Lazio's lost its charismathic president Zenobi, who had spent all his life at Lazio acting as President during different periods: 1927-28, 1929-32,1932-34, 1938-39 and 1949-53. In the season 1953-54 Lazio finished in 11th spot a season remember for two good results against Juventus with a 2-1 victory in Rome and goalless draw in Turin, with Lazio's keeper saving a Boniperti's penalty. In that season Lazio's lost its unbeatable run of ten consecutive matches in the Roman derbies.  Even in the following season Lazio ended 11th. After a false start, Lazio made a good comeback recovered registering significant victories in Rome against the reigning champions Inter F.C. coached by "the wizard" Herrera, and against Juventus and Roma. In the summer of 1955 the club conducted a transfer market and signed the Swede forward Selmosson together with two Italian strikers Bettini and Mucinelli. At the end of the season this trio totalled thirty-two goals out of the fifty four scored by the entire squad. The start of the season however was not so promising, as Lazio acquired only four points out of the first six matches. In January, Carver replaced the duo Ferrero-Copernico on Lazio's bench and from then on, Lazio made a great comeback ending in third place. In Lazio history so-far this was the second best ever placement in the Italian league, following the 2nd place obtained in the season 1936-37. Lazio managed to repeat itself even in the season 1956-57, were after the usual false start it came from behind ending third on forty-one points. Just seven points behind first placed Milan and one from reigning champions Fiorentina.  Lazio however did not manage to continue this positive trend and in the season 1957-58 ended just four points above relegation with the worst defence of the league. However, on the 24th September 1958, Lazio conquered its first ever honour in Italian football winning the Coppa Italia at the expense of Fiorentina at the Olympic Stadium in Rome in front 50,000 exuberant fans. Unfortunately, Lazio continued to have disappointing performances in the league, ending 11th place in the season 1958-59 and 12th in the season 1959-60, just five points above relegation zone. However Relegation was not however avoided in the season 1960-61 following a disastrous season in which only five wins were registered out of thirty-four matches. The season was characterised by the changing of three different coaches (i.e. Bernardini, Flamini and Carver) and two presidents Andrea Ercoli and Tessarolo. Amazingly Lazio managed to reach the final of the Coppa Italia once again against Fiorentina, but this time the "Viola" took revenge won the cup. Therefore for the first time in its history Lazio had to play in the second division (Serie B). The side was revolutionised and its performances were discontinuous. The squad finished fourth, just one point behind Napoli and Modena who both won promotion. It was a great disappointment for the light-blues especially since in the direct encounter against Napoli ,that ended goalless, the referee ruled out a clear goal for Lazio, as the ball passed through a hole in the net and went out, .incredible but true ! Although in that season the two roman clubs played in different categories, they played each other in the quarterfinals of the Coppa Italia. Lazio was defeated and thus eliminated after the penalty shoot-outs. The season 62-63 meant once again Serie B for Lazio. After the first round the Eagles ended in sixth position, but in the second round they had a positive run ending in third place, just enough to secure promotion in Serie A after two years in hell ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | |
