I like that Baronio is starting because he is the only one who can play in that defensive midfielder/playmaker positition(in our Beijing squad). Last year he played entire season in Brescia and I think he could surprise you. Although the task is difficult...

I can not see how this supposed formation is the best use of our players. No Foggia, Baronio playing and Matuzalem in an unfamiliar position (at least with us). I didn't really believe that we could get another boss who didn't show total faith in Foggia, seems like I was wrong. We would shape up far better with a four man midfield or the three behind one. Mauri gets chance after chance, be it cos we don't have anyone else or just that the boss likes him. Hell, why can't Brocchi play deep and Matuzalem and Mauri play as the midfield with Foggia in if this must be the formation?
Hopefully the formation will work and Baronio and Mauri will play well, it just seems absurd to me to play a player who has been owned by us for many years and never been good enough. Now it seems we are going backwards.

Sorry for the negativity before such an important match, I'm just a bit mystified by the plans...

I agree Ed. For me, Dabo/Mauri - Matuzalem - Brocchi is a perfectly balanced three man midfield and in light of Ledesma's absence it just makes sense. At Shakhtar, Matuzalem was a gun in a free role behind the strikers but I don't see how that can possibly work in the tactics based Serie A. Maybe Francy will drop back into midfield in a formation more akin to a 4-1-3-2. Baronio's role then would be to provide extra protection but then Foggia loses out.

A three man midfield would have allowed Zarate and Foggia to play alongside Rocchi/Cruz, or flank him if necessary. Alternatively, a 4-2-3-1 would have been fine too. I think Zarate and Foggia in free, roaming roles is better than having Matuzalem up there and Baronio as a regista.

But I have faith in our coach, so let's see.

I think Baronio might just have a good game tonight. If he can finally show the promise he has always had I wouldn't mind building a midfield around him.

I thought I wouldn't be the only one to be thinking that way! Brocchi can be our destroyer, there is no need for Baronio (who if I remember from one of the few times he played regularly to any level at Reggina years ago was not simply a defensive midfielder anyway). It seems strange to promote Matuzalem to a position he may be used to but not in Serie A and with this team, he must have done well in training?

I'll keep the faith for now, we know Ballardini is a good coach, lets see what he can do....
Still, leaving Foggia out is a massive black mark to start with for me, the guy was never totally trusted by Rossi until last season but surely showed enough to the whole league to prove his ability.

Oh and Gio, come on man!!! Baronio was supposed to be that player in '99 or '00 or whatever - the promise well and truly dried up years ago. If we are even playing him is a massive backward step, let alone anyone considering this...

Baronio is there to create from deep. Since Ledesma is not there, who can possibly play that role, assuming Ballardini requires someone to.

The negativity is uncalled for at this stage. Balla has been in camp with the team for a while, he would've tried everything and I have faith that he sees this as the best option. Ether that or he just wants to fuck around with the media before the big game..

Just cause Foggia is not starting, doesn't mean he isn't trusted or is out of favour.

Come on rega`, its a new season, new coach. I'm willing to give almost everything and everyone their chance to prove themselves, including Baronio and Ballardini.

If nothing else, at least we know that Baronio is guaranteed to be fired up tonight. The man knows that he was expected to do great things, he wants nothing more than to prove himself to the coach of Lazio and with Ledesma on this outs, will see this as his last chance.

We can win this match! Come on Lazio!!!!

Eto...I dunno...I think currently, I'd be more afraid of Ibra. Ibra IN Serie A was great. In the CL he sucked, so...right now...we have to take advantage. I want to see what Cruz and Foggia can do!
